Can you Introduce the band?
Dissona
Hello! We are the Chicago-based, progressive metal band Dissona! We just released our brand new single and music video “The Prodigal Son” which is available everywhere. Our newly announced EP, “Dreadfully Distinct,” will be dropping on November 10th, 2023 via Earache Distribution. We’re very much looking forward to answering some questions for you guys!

Where did the name come from?
Dissona
The name is a portmanteau of the words dissonan and persona. In the past, Dissona made more regular use of dissonance in the music but in more modern time, it serves as more of a metaphor for our approach and ideals with the music and art we create. We strive to keep things unique and unexpected while still making the experience as engaging as possible for the listener.

You have an album coming out can you tell us about the recording process?
Dissona
The writing begins with an extensive preliminary brainstorming session with all band members. We discuss what we’re trying to accomplish with the new music, the story, and the descriptors associated with each song. From there, Matt creates the compositions using Guitar Pro software and sends his full drafts to the band for review/sculpting. We then move the compositions into Pro Tools where the layering is done over a synthesized core band and then legitimate guitars, bass, and vocals are tracked at Matt’s home studio. Drew records his drum parts himself at his own home studio and then Matt edits and produces them before the final mix process begins.

Do you have plans to tour this release?

Can you tell us about the music scene where you’re from?
Dissona
The Chicago music scene is enormously vibrant, rewarding, and welcoming! With metal especially! We have such great relationships with the promoters over here and we’ve been fortunate enough to perform alongside just about every band in our metal top 10 lists. And the memories continue!

Was music something you’ve always wanted to do?
Dissona
We all met through a shared love of music and a fiery need to create. Beyond that, we’ve always been tough critics with the music we consume and we are just as tough on ourselves as we create our own art. It’s a calling, it’s a purpose, it’s part of our flesh and blood and we will never stop!
