Devils in the detail - A love lost in range Review

About the band

Devils in the detail are a three piece heavy metal band based in Belfast, Co. Antrim, only forming in 2020 they are relatively new but have already released their debut EP ‘A love lost in range’, so I just wanted to say, this EP is only three songs long so the review will be shorter than normal

The review

First song is ‘Agony’, it starts off slow before exploding into heavy vocals and instrumentals, they use a nice mix of heavy and clean vocals throughout the song. The choruses lyrics utilize a lot of repetition they also use actual spoken parts which I feel is a cool addition. There’s a pretty long solo near the end which sounds amazing, we head back to the heavy riffs before they change it up and calm it down with a more acoustic sound, it morphs back to the heaviness to sing us out with the screaming/singing mix before switching to a slightly distorted speech, it kind of sounds like an old radio broadcast.

Song No. 2 is called ‘Cannibal martyr’ and the name alone is enough to get you listening out of curiosity, the drums are a lot faster here almost sounding bullet-like, it sounds almost deathcore-esq. although the title is really dark its a really catchy tune, they stick with the mix of screaming and singing, there’s more instrumental breaks here and you can really appreciate the guitar bass and drums and how talented these lads are. They use some echoed shouting sporadically from about midway through to the end which kind of gives a feeling the singer may be losing their mind, its a really cool touch. This one ends with talking similar to the last song.

The third and final song is called ‘The void’ which begins with talking and heavy breathing before erupting with the heavy instrumentals, they keep the trend of the clean and heavy vocals but lean more on the clean this time around, near the end of the song there’s another deathcore style drumming bit before slowing down with some whisper singing. we then get a few build-ups that lead to more whispering before the heavy vocals kick in again, the song ends abruptly with the ‘Bleh’ sound so stereotypical for metalcore.

Conclusion

I loved this, you can hear a lot of influence from early core bands and I love the addition of the speaking parts, they just sound really cool in music, these guys obviously have a passion for what they do. The band only came out in early 2020 and to have such a solid release in such a short time is absolutely amazing. I’m genuinely excited to see where they go from here.
