Interview with Despite The Reverence
Despite The Reverence are a metal band from Saskatchewan, Canada, all answers by Johnny fast
Alicia
Can you introduce the band?
Johnny
Tom Liska and I (Johnny Fast) started the band after being in a previous group together. Tom is lead vocals and Johnny is guitars and some backing vocals. We recruited Jordan Poelzer on bass and Brad Zimmer on drums after trying a few other musicians and knew we had the right group right away.
Alicia
Where did the name come from?
Johnny
A name is the hardest thing to come up with and we definitely went through quite a few names before settling on one. Tim came up with the name which was basically referring to our musical style and lyrical content. Despite the reverence of our subject matter, our music is still going to get you charged up and pack some heat.
Alicia
You have an album coming out can you tell us about the recording process?
Johnny
Our recording process has been solid through all of our albums though we get more efficient with it and have learned where to take time when needed. Generally, Johnny writes most of the riffs and brings them to the band with the album concept. The band really breaks down the music and develops the songs. Tom writes all the lyrics once the song is close to the final arrangement.
Alicia
Do you have plans to tour this release?
Johnny
Yes, we have always toured Central and Western Canada mainly in the spring and fall, and plan to do this again. We have started ironing out some dates and are excited to play this album live.
Alicia
Can you tell us about the music scene where you’re from?
Johnny
hnnyAs it seems in most places, it can be a little hit-and-miss. The scene has taken a bit over the last 5 years but seems to be growing again and people are more interested in getting back out to see live music again. We had some venues close down but recently a couple has sprung back up. We just have to be patient.
Alicia
Was music something you’ve always wanted to do
Johnny
Always! Since being a kid, music just made sense and you could feel it inside you. Once I learned how to play and started getting better it became something we've always done. All of us have been playing and performing for many years now. It's been a lot of different groups and musicians until Despite The Reverence and now we have found the group that stands the test of time.
