Alicia

Can you Introduce the band?

Black Pestilence

Black Pestilence is a black metal/punk band from Calgary, AB, Canada. Originally it started out as a one-man project in 2008 by vocalist/bassist, Valax, but later developed into a full three-piece touring band.

Alicia

Where did the name come from?

Black Pestilence

There’s no special meaning or origin behind the name. It sounded cool at the time and no one had taken it.

Alicia

Your album just came out can you tell us about the recording process?

Black Pestilence

Chaotic Wisdom is a Satanic d-beat. The music is formulated around typical punk rock song structures while being projected through the playing style of black metal. Greater emphasis was placed on the samples used on this album in the form of additional percussion and cacophonous electronics. Many of the song lyrics touch base on various themes related to Satanic philosophy, societal stratification, and general debauchery.

Alicia

Do you have plans to tour this release?

Black Pestilence

We just completed an eight-date tour across Western Canada in September, shortly after releasing “Chaotic Wisdom”. We plan to tour again early next year. The exact cities are currently in the planning stages.

Alicia

Can you tell us about the music scene where you’re from?

Black Pestilence

We are from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. There has always been a strong underground scene throughout all of Alberta. Ten years ago, it was very small and everyone knew each other. Now, it has grown substantially. One of the most unique things would be the crossover between metal, punk, and hardcore at shows. If it’s heavy, they will play together. It’s nice to see not so much division as in the earlier days.

Alicia

Was music something you’ve always wanted to do?

Black Pestilence

Absolutely. Ever since I was twelve years old, I knew I wanted to play music to a high degree.

Alicia

How has tour been?

Black Pestilence

This past tour across Western Canada was extremely successful and enjoyable.
