Interview with Disorientation
Disorientation are a symphonic metal band from Québec, Canada, answers by Marie-Claude Fleury (vocals, oboe, English horn, drum programming) and Daniel Daris (guitars and bass)
Alicia
Can you Introduce the band?
Marie-Claude Fleury
We are Disorientation, a symphonic metal project from Montreal, Canada, but we are more misery and distress than elegance and grandeur. Our sound is rather natural and unpolished, the songs are on the depressive side and use simple riffs that go for emotion rather than technique. I play oboe and English horn so that provides the orchestration. We go for a smaller approach that sounds more like chamber music.
Daniel Daris
We share an interest in dissonant music and started recording ideas based on that. We had many song fragments written here and there, some even started in early 2010, but it was in late 2019 that we got serious and started recording what would become our self-titled EP.
Alicia
Where did the name come from?
Marie-Claude
When the idea of the name Disorientation came to my mind, I immediately liked it because there was an abstract quality in it, without any style of metal or lyrics implicitly associated with it. And no one would want to name their band Disorientation.
Alicia
You have an album coming out can you tell us about the recording process?
Marie-Claude
On December 1st, we will release our 2nd EP titled Survival Mode. Like our first effort it has 3 songs, but this time we adopted a more straightforward approach because those specific songs required a harder edge as they are generally faster.
Daniel
Just like we did for our self-titled EP, we recorded the songs in our rehearsal space with terribly outdated laptop and soundcard. Because the songs are more direct and in-your-face, this required a change of sound and we decided to have the mixing and mastering done by Hugues Deslauriers.
Alicia
Do you have plans to tour this release?
Daniel
We definitely want to play shows, we are working on getting a line-up together.
Alicia
Can you tell us about the music scene where you’re from
Marie-Claude
Montreal has long been known for its metal scene, nowadays there are metal shows of every sub-genre of metal every week. There are so many bands, venues and shows, you can’t just make something that is OK, you want to push yourself so your music stands out.
Daniel
There are a lot of technical and extreme metal bands.
Alicia
Was music something you’ve always wanted to do?
Daniel
Yes. Music has been around me since childhood, my dad was playing guitar and I discovered music through his vinyl and cassette collection. I have no idea what I would do if I was not into music today.
Marie-Claude
It was something that I wanted to do, but that I had to set aside to deal with other stuff. When I finally had more time, I got back to it and I started working on songs until I waspleased with them.
